WORKSHOPS

World Music
A workshop exploring the vibrancy, colour and passion of music from around the world. Students will be challenged to create their own compositions in response to music they hear performed.

• Nimbus Ensemble performs a short piece of music to the students. The students are asked to describe the music and discuss the country of origin.
• The students form a large circle and play musical warm-up games, designed to break the ice and introduce further elements of world music.
• The students split into 3 groups and a member of Nimbus leads each group. Each player performs a short piece to their group. The group has to guess what country the piece is from and the style of the music is explored.
• With the help of their Nimbus leader, the students create a piece of music based on the short performance they have heard. To help, they are given a “box of tricks” which contains items such as rhythmic and melodic motifs, costumes, instruments and other objects.
Duration: approx 40 minutes
• Students perform their compositions to each other and there are opportunities for feed-back.
• End with another short performance by the Nimbus Ensemble

Total Duration: 90 minutes

Music and Storytelling
This workshop explores how music can be used to tell stories and is designed for primary school aged children.

• Each member of the Nimbus Ensemble introduces his or her instrument to the group. The children are asked to describe each instrument and guess what it will sound like. A demonstration plus a short piece of music is then played to the class on each instrument.

• We then explain that we would like to make up a story using our instruments to tell it. The children come up with a simple story which we then play. If the children have instruments, they are encouraged to join in.

• The children are split into 3 groups. The children are asked to either draw or write a story on a piece of paper. The group decides which ones to use and together a piece of music is composed around that story. Each group is given a “box of tricks” to inspire them and includes costumes, percussion instruments, storybooks and other props.
Duration: approx 30 minutes

• The children introduce and perform their stories to each other.

• Session ends with a Nimbus Ensemble story.

Total Duration: 75 minutes
